HookTheory for Learning About Song Structure

School of Rock – Week 14 – Intro to Analysis

Summary

This week was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed analyzing a song of my choice. This week I also have begun recording our song for the Bridge Music Project. This was a good week.

CONCERT

  • I listened to a clean version of Man I Is by Logic.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

  • This week I ran into a problem. The song I had picked used a sample so there wasn’t much information on the composition. In the end I managed to find what the song was sampled from and after some research I figured out what was added to the sample that turned it into a beat.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY EVALUATION

  • This was a fun week. I hope to analyze more music in the future.

School of Rock – Week 13 – Changes

“Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.” –  Leonard Bernstein

SUMMARY

  • This week I worked on writing lyrics for the song for my group. This was the Room that I prioritized this week and spent the most time in.

Your score: 8

Outside and Reframing thoughts

  • I liked learning about changing my perspective on negative thoughts and reframing them. I worry about my dad working in a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. To reframe this I will say: My dad knows how to keep himself and my family safe by wearing a mask, washing his hands and getting tested regularly. I would say that my rated stress level has gone from a 6 to 4.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

How interested in songwriting, song structure, and music production?

  • (YES) I am very interested in writing lyrics. I spent much longer in this room because I am very passionate about this topic. I did not set a timer in this room because i find it difficult to write lyrics with the thought in the back of my mind that a loud beep beep beep is about to interrupt me.

Your score: (7) I love to write lyrics but sometimes its difficult to get my thoughts on the paper.

How interested in recording, engineering (souneffects, EQ), and mixing?

  • I enjoy This room but I am unfamiliar with Soundtrap so this has been more difficult than I thought it would be.

Your score: 5

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

  • This week over zoom Liam and I, with the help of our mentor Bradford, figured out how the chorus would fit into the beat by adding power chords.
